All tracks recorded on portable equipment in 1959, 1960, and 1962, except tracks 19 and 22-25, were which made in 1960.
Tracks 1, 3-6, 9, 12, 13, 15, 19, and 21-25 recorded at the home of Butch Cage in Zachary, Louisiana.
Tracks 2, 17, 18, 20 recorded at Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola.
Track 7 recorded during a music therapy session at State Mental Hospital in Jackson, Louisiana.
Tracks 8 and 11 recorded at the home of Mable Lee Williams, Robert Pete Williams' sister, in Scotlandville, Louisiana.
Track 10 recorded at Rebecca Smith's house near Napoleonville, Louisiana.
Track 14 recorded at Leon Strickland's house in Killona, Louisiana.
Track 16 recorded during a visit to Smoky Babe's home area in Vance, Mississippi, in 1962.

Tracks 1-14 were originally issued on Folklyric LP 111, and later re-issued on Arhoolie LP 2018. Tracks 15-25 previously unissued.

"The common usage term for African-Americans has changed many times over the years and has included Negro, Colored, Black, Afro-American, and African-American. We have retained the term in usage at the time of these recordings."
