“Summer grass / all that remains / of young warriors’ dreams.” (after Basho)
Occasional Poem on an Autumn Day: “When I’m at peace I let everything go.” (after Ch’eng Hao)
“A snowy morning / and smoke from the kitchen roof— / it is good.” (after Buson)
"After the Wars," a beautifully clangorous four-movement piano solo, was written for pianist Cahill as part of her “A Sweeter Music” series of commissioned works based around the concept of “peace” from a broad variety of composers (from Terry Riley to Frederic Rzewski to Yoko Ono to…). Knitting together this work, Garland writes, “The principal musical idea in all four [movements] is that of sustained tones, creating a sense of echo, distance, and ringing/fading away…. Each movement is like a single image, simply stated with relatively little temporal or thematic development.”
