delivered from a textbook. We begin with established course material
when appropriate, but we can also adapt the training around the
client's environment, objectives, workflows and level of experience.
That distinction matters.
A class may be called ITIL, Excel, SQL, artificial intelligence or
Snowflake, but two organizations taking the same course may have very
different reasons for being there. One may be trying to improve an
existing workflow. Another may need employees to become comfortable
with a new technology. A third may have experienced staff who
understand the fundamentals but need help applying them to a
particular business problem.
The course title may be the same.
The training doesn't necessarily have to be.
Start With What People Actually Need to Know
Before a private engagement, we can work with the client to
understand who will attend, what they already know and what the
organization wants them to be able to do afterward.
That may mean emphasizing certain portions of a standard curriculum
and spending less time on others. It may mean incorporating examples
from the client's industry. It may mean discussing an existing process
or workflow. Sometimes it simply means giving participants enough room
to ask questions about how the material relates to situations they
encounter every day.
The objective isn't to customize something merely for the sake of
calling it customized.
It's to make the time spent in training more useful.
From Course Material to the Real World
Some of the most productive moments in a technology class happen when
someone asks:
“Can we look at how this would work in our environment?”
We can.
An IT service management class can move from discussing an abstract
workflow to examining how incidents and service requests actually move
through an organization. An Excel class can use realistic business
data instead of meaningless sample numbers. A SQL or data course can
emphasize the kinds of questions participants need to answer. An AI
workshop can explore how artificial intelligence might assist with
tasks employees already perform.
This doesn't mean abandoning fundamentals. Fundamentals provide the foundation.
But understanding a concept and recognizing where to apply it are
different skills.
Good training should develop both.

But passing an examination and knowing what to do Monday morning
aren't always the same thing.
When certification preparation is part of an engagement, we can teach
the material necessary to understand the framework and prepare for the
examination while also helping participants explore how those concepts
apply to their work.
The goal isn't merely to remember the correct answer to a test question.
It's to understand why it's the correct answer—and when the
idea behind it becomes useful.
Training Should Change Something
At the end of a class, participants should know more than they knew
when they arrived. But the better measure comes afterward.
Can they recognize a problem differently?
Can they use a tool more effectively?
Can they improve a workflow?
Can they ask better questions of their data?
Can they recognize where artificial intelligence is genuinely
useful—and where it isn't?
Can they explain what they've learned to someone else?
Technology will continue changing, which means organizations will
continue needing to learn.
