John Scofield has spent more than five decades moving comfortably between straight-ahead jazz, blues, funk and the wonderfully difficult-to-categorize territory in between.

This November, Colorado gets two opportunities to hear him revisit some of the music from the more electric and groove-oriented side of his career.

Scofield's Electrospective looks back at compositions associated with projects including Blue Matter, Überjam and A Go Go—not as an attempt to recreate the original recordings, but to approach that music again after decades of musical evolution.

And the band alone makes these performances particularly interesting.

Scofield will be joined by Oteil Burbridge on bass, Larry Goldings on keyboards and Adam Deitch on drums.

For those of us who have followed Scofield through the many turns his career has taken, this is an intriguing proposition: an older and extraordinarily experienced improviser returning to music he played decades ago—not to reproduce it, but to see what it has become.

The Denver performance takes place Saturday, November 7 at 7:30 p.m. in Gates Concert Hall at the Newman Center. The Boulder performance follows Sunday, November 8 at 8:00 p.m. at the Boulder Theater.
