7One of the reasons that reefs are so amazing is that they grow and reproduce much more quickly than do most plants or animals. It takes a relatively short period of time for a coral reef to grow and reproduce. Once it is done growing, however, it can take hundreds or even thousands of years for new reefs to form. These algae communities grow and reproduce through what is called "phytoplankton" which is like a plant within the reef environment.
