description
2The Call of the Wild is an adventure story written by Jack London and published in 1903. The setting is in the Yukon, Canada during the Klondike Gold Rush of the 1890s. Due to the geography, weather and terrain, teams of sled dogs were in high demand for personal transportation and to haul supplies. The main character of the novel is a dog named Buck. The story begins with Buck's life in California, where he is stolen from domestic life and forced into service as a sled dog in Alaska. Buck is compelled to abandon his domestication to survive against mother nature, feral dogs, and vicious humans. Before writing the story, Jack London spend almost a year in the Yukon gathering material for the book. Originally the story was serialized for newspaper consumption but was later adapted for publication as a book. The popularity of the book contributed to its early adaptation to film in 1923. The Call of the Wild has since had numerous cinematic adaptations.
