Fire is Better depicts the ups and downs of fantasy, violence, and pleasure in the life on a young homosexual man in Lima during the nineteen nineties. It is a story where sex, fear, beauty, cruelty, and love are all attributes of a memory that makes them indistinguishable--shrapnel in a body going through a revealing trance, considered, as the protagonist describes, an "instrument in the service of imagination's need and desire". Through a carefully crafted poetic language, José Carlos Yrigoyen knew how to portray the spirit of an era in his work, embodied in a young man, whose skin is a battlefield between his own yearnings and the world.
